Tanja Rosner and Todd McRae, Tate McRae’s parents, created a home filled with passion, discipline, and unconditional support.
One of the most impressive careers in modern pop music belongs to Tate Rosner McRae.
This Canadian singer, songwriter, and dancer was born on July 1, 2003, in Calgary, Alberta.
She first became famous when she competed on So You Think You Can Dance in 2016 and came in third, which was a record finish for a non-American competitor.
After that, she signed with RCA Records and put out a series of well-received EPs, including “Too Young to Be Sad” (2021), which was the most-streamed female EP on Spotify that year.
“You Broke Me First,” her first single, made it onto the US Billboard Hot 100, which meant she had arrived on the world stage.
McRae’s first studio album, I Used to Think I Could Fly (2022), and her second album, Think Later (2023), both helped her career take off.
The song “Greedy,” which was one of the best-selling songs of 2024 worldwide, came from the second album.
Her third album, So Close to What (2025), made her a superstar by debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200.
She had her first number-one single in the US that year as a featured artist on Morgan Wallen’s “What I Want.”
She also got her first Grammy nomination for “Just Keep Watching.”
Besides being on the charts, McRae is a rare triple threat: she’s an elite dancer, a confessional songwriter, and a live performer who sells out Madison Square Garden multiple nights in a row.
Tate McRae Parents Turned Early Talent Into Global Fame
Every great artist has a story that starts at home. For Tate McRae, that story starts with her mother, Tanja Rosner, and her father, Todd McRae.
They are two very different but equally important people. They made Tate into the artist she is today by giving her a home full of passion, discipline, and unconditional love.
Tanja Rosner, Tate’s mother, is a German-Canadian dance teacher, choreographer, and businesswoman.
Before she became a professional ballet teacher, she studied ballet in Germany. She had a big impact on Tate right away.
Tanja got Tate interested in dance as a hobby when he was six years old, and it turned into a lifelong passion.
As Tate got older and her talent became clear, Tanja stepped up her involvement.
She owns YYC Dance Project, a Calgary-based dance company where Tate trained from the age of 11 in all styles of dance.
Tate had a unique advantage because her mother was both her parent and the owner of the studio.
She trained with someone who knew her better than anyone else. Tanja’s deep understanding of the dance world, along with her connections and reputation in the community, helped Tate get into high-level competitions and international events that shaped the beginning of her career.
But Tanja’s job is much more than just technical. Tate calls her mother her “fairy godmother,” a person who has almost unlimited faith in what can happen.
Tate said in an interview with Rolling Stone, “My mom is my fairy godmother.”

Tanja is the creative mentor who is always in the spotlight, while Tate’s father, Todd McRae, has a quieter but just as important role.
Todd is a Canadian lawyer and executive in the oil and gas industry, with Scottish ancestry. He has worked in high-level jobs, such as Vice President at Pacific Energy.
His work in the international energy sector has had a big impact on the McRae family’s journey, and it has been a big part of Tate’s life in ways that were not expected.
Todd’s job made the whole family move from Calgary to Muscat, Oman, when Tate was only two years old.
Tate went to the American International School in Muscat while the family lived there for about three to four years.
Tate’s early travels abroad introduced her to different cultures and ways of life at a very young age.
As a corporate lawyer, Todd doesn’t want to be in the public eye too much.
