Michael Thorbjornsen grew up with three sisters who sacrificed much of their childhood to support his golf career.

Michael Thorbjornsen has quietly built one of the most compelling stories in modern professional golf.

Born on September 16, 2001, in Cleveland, Ohio, the young American turned heads long before he ever set foot on the PGA Tour.

He won the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur at Baltusrol Golf Club, becoming the first champion under that exemption to make the cut at the U.S. Open when he competed at Pebble Beach in 2019.

He then headed to Stanford, where he became a member of the Cardinal men’s golf team.

There, he won a lot of amateur titles, like the 2021 Western Amateur and the Massachusetts Amateur.

His great college career put him at the top of the PGA Tour University rankings in 2024, where he earned a full PGA Tour card.

He became a professional in June 2024, and right away people noticed him.

He came in second at the John Deere Classic in July 2024 and again at the 2025 Corales Puntacana Championship, losing by just one stroke to Garrick Higgo.

Thorbjornsen has become one of the most promising young players on Tour thanks to his strong, technically sound swing and never-give-up attitude.

Michael Thorbjornsen’s Sisters

Every successful athlete has a family, a support system that quietly shoulders the weight of their career.

For Michael Thorbjornsen, that support comes from his three younger sisters: Victoria Lotus, Michelle Caprise, and Teresa Corniche.

Each of them has contributed in significant ways, though their contributions often go unnoticed, to his ascent in the world of professional golf.

Michael is the only son in the family, and his sisters have been constants throughout his journey.

From the time he competed in local junior tournaments as a child, the three girls traveled alongside their mother, Sandra, sitting through long rounds, remaining quiet in gallery settings, and adjusting family life around the schedule that Michael’s talent demanded.

Sandra herself has spoken openly about the sacrifices the sisters made, acknowledging that the travel demands and the need to put Michael’s career first required a great deal from three young girls who had little say in the matter.

Teresa, the youngest of the three, has shown her own connection to the game.

She has appeared in social media posts golfing alongside Michael and his Stanford teammate and close friend Karl Vilips during rounds in New England, suggesting that golf runs through the family as more than just a spectator sport.

Victoria, the eldest of the three sisters, has appeared in family videos and content tied to Michael’s early career milestones.

All three sisters have shown up as part of his on-course gallery at major events, including the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts — a moment that brought the entire family together after a period of separation due to their father’s work abroad.

Despite their visible presence at key moments in Michael’s career, the sisters maintain an exceptionally private personal life.

They hold no public social media profiles connected to their brother’s fame, have given no interviews, and appear in virtually no mainstream golf coverage beyond passing mentions.

Their ages, personal pursuits, education, and careers remain entirely out of the public eye.

The Thorbjornsen family has always chosen to keep the focus on Michael while the sisters quietly and without fanfare support him. This shows how close-knit and selfless the family is.

Michael Thorbjornsen Credits His Parents For Shaping His Golf Career

Michael Thorbjornsen owes much of his achievements to his parents.

Their diverse backgrounds, a mutual love of golf, and unwavering support have all played a crucial role in his development.

His father, Thorbjørn “Ted” Thorbjørnsen, grew up in Elverum, Norway.

Golf found him later in life, arriving in his hometown alongside cable television and a new course built on land cleared by a forest fire.

Ted, an engineer at heart, tackled the golf swing with the same analytical rigor he applied to any technical challenge, immersing himself completely.

He became self-taught and developed a fascination with swing mechanics that he would eventually pass on to his son.

Ted was Michael’s main swing coach from the start, the one who molded the potent, contemporary technique – complete with Michael’s unique ten-finger grip – that defines his playing style.

Though Ted’s career eventually led him to Abu Dhabi around 2016, he kept coaching Michael from a distance, providing in-depth video breakdowns and technical assessments to ensure Michael’s progress remained steady. They were together again at the 2022 U.S. Open, a moment that carried emotional weight after years apart.

Those who know the family describe Ted as someone who believed in Michael’s talent from the earliest age and provided the technical backbone that allowed that talent to flourish.

His mother, Sandra Chiang, grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe, before moving to Norway, where she met and married Ted.

She relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, at age 23 — arriving just in time, as it turned out, to give birth to Michael mere hours after she had planned to tee off.

Sandra studied at Ursuline College in Ohio, where she competed as a collegiate golfer after Ted encouraged her to take up the game for networking purposes.

She discovered a natural swing and quickly made golf a central part of family life.

Sandra took on an enormous role in Michael’s development. She tracked every shot he took in tournaments and practice for more than two decades, introduced him to the game as an infant, and carded his scores when he played nine holes at age two.

As Ted’s international work pulled him away from home, Sandra managed the bulk of tournament travel and family responsibilities on her own, shepherding Michael and his three younger sisters through the demands of a serious junior golf career.

She also made the decision to send Michael to IMG Academy to sharpen his junior ranking — a turning point in his development.

By 2024, Sandra had remarried Kimo Winterbottom and now goes by Sandra Winterbottom.

She has spoken publicly about the role community support and family sacrifice played in bringing Michael to the PGA Tour.

Together, Ted and Sandra built a household where golf was, as the family describes it, “more a creed and less a hobby.”

Their Norwegian-Zimbabwean heritage, their shared belief in discipline and hard work, and their willingness to reorganize their lives around their son’s potential created the environment that produced one of professional golf’s most promising young stars.
