Following his divorce from his wife, Tiana Bardwell Roy, Brandon Roy focused on fatherhood and raising his children.
Brandon Dawayne Roy Sr., born on July 23, 1984, in Seattle, Washington, stands as one of the most celebrated basketball players to ever grace the NBA.
Roy played six seasons for the Portland Trail Blazers and the Minnesota Timberwolves, earning the nickname “B-Roy” and the title “the Natural” from Trail Blazers announcer Brian Wheeler.
The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Roy sixth overall in the 2006 NBA Draft after he completed four standout years with the Washington Huskies, and the Trail Blazers quickly acquired him via trade.
Roy wasted no time making his presence felt. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in a near-unanimous vote during the 2006–07 season, claiming 127 out of 128 first-place votes.
He went on to earn selection to three NBA All-Star Games (2008, 2009, and 2010) and secured spots on two All-NBA teams.
His ability to deliver in clutch moments — including a legendary 24-point fourth-quarter performance against the Dallas Mavericks in the 2011 playoffs — made him a fan favorite.
A degenerative knee condition forced him to retire in December 2011, though he made a brief comeback with the Timberwolves in 2012.
After hanging up his sneakers, Roy moved into coaching, winning the Naismith National High School Coach of the Year award in 2017 after leading Nathan Hale High School to a perfect 29–0 regular season record before taking over at Garfield High School, his alma mater, in Seattle.
Brandon Roy And His Wife Tiana Bardwell Roy Built A Life Together Rooted in Love And Family
Behind Brandon Roy’s rise to NBA stardom stood a woman who had been by his side since their high school years — Tiana Bardwell, also known as Tiana Bardwell Roy.
The two met as students at Garfield High School in Seattle and built a bond that carried them through nearly a decade before they married.
Tiana and Brandon began dating during their time at Garfield High School, and their relationship deepened as Roy’s basketball career took off.
The couple welcomed their first child — a son named Brandon Roy Jr., affectionately nicknamed “BJ” — on March 27, 2007, right in the middle of Roy’s remarkable rookie season with the Trail Blazers.
In January 2009, they welcomed their daughter, Mariah Leilani. A third child, a son named Brayden, arrived around 2017.
Brandon proposed to Tiana in June 2008 in a way that reflected both his creativity and their deep connection.
He suggested they go ring shopping together, but secretly already had the ring.
He hid the box in a drawer for Tiana to discover on her own, then walked in, cradling infant BJ and asked her, “BJ wants to know if you will marry his daddy?”
Tiana said yes without hesitation. The couple originally planned an August 2009 wedding but pushed the date back as life continued to unfold around them.
Brandon Roy and Tiana Bardwell married on September 4, 2010, in a private ceremony in West Linn, Oregon.
Tiana was hands-on with the event’s logistics, coordinating things like the food tastings. Brandon, on the other hand, concentrated on ensuring the day had a genuine sense of significance.
The celebration earned a feature in Oregon Bride magazine, with photography by Fritz Photography capturing the couple’s special day.
At the time, both spoke warmly about the strength of their bond after nearly ten years together.

Unfortunately, Brandon Roy and Tiana Bardwell eventually parted ways.
Divorce proceedings began around the time Roy started coaching at Nathan Hale High School in 2016–2017 and continued through his early years at Garfield.
Brandon has spoken candidly about the pain the separation caused him, describing it as “a root canal that doesn’t go away.”
The divorce coincided with a difficult period in his life, including a 2017 shooting incident in Compton, California, where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries at a family gathering.
Roy took a sabbatical from coaching around 2018 to focus on fatherhood.
Following the divorce, BJ and Mariah initially lived with Tiana in Seattle.
BJ later played for his father at Garfield and went on to attend the University of Washington, following in his dad’s footsteps. Roy has stated plainly:
“My children are the most important thing to me in my life, and I want to be a good dad, so I put them first.”
He has since welcomed a fourth child, son Michael, born around 2018, with his fiancée Angel, and no public record of a second marriage exists.
