Fernando Gabriel Mendoza V was born on October 1, 2003, in Boston, Massachusetts, while his father was completing a medical residency.
The family soon settled in Miami, Florida, where the 22-year-old grew up and attended Christopher Columbus High School before heading to the University of California, Berkeley.
After two seasons with the Golden Bears, Mendoza transferred to Indiana University, where the signal-caller completed 72 percent of his passes for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns in 2025, leading the Hoosiers to a perfect 16-0 record and their first-ever national championship.
He became the first Indiana player to win the Heisman Trophy before the Las Vegas Raiders selected him with the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Fernando has two younger brothers, Alberto and Max Mendoza. All three grew up in the same Miami household shaped by Cuban heritage, Catholic faith, and a deep love of football.
Their father, Fernando Mendoza Sr., played on the offensive line at Christopher Columbus High School alongside current Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal.
Their mother, Elsa Mendoza, has lived with multiple sclerosis for years, a battle that has quietly fueled both Fernando and Alberto every time they step on the field.
Alberto Mendoza, the middle brother, was born on June 6, 2006, in Miami, Florida. The 19-year-old attended the same Christopher Columbus High School and did not waste a single snap there, throwing for 4,596 yards, 57 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while leading the Explorers to back-to-back Florida state championships in 2022 and 2023.
He initially committed to James Madison University but flipped his commitment to Indiana when head coach Curt Cignetti took over the program, putting both Mendoza brothers in the same Hoosiers huddle.
In 2025, the younger Mendoza backed up Fernando throughout Indiana’s undefeated run, finishing the season completing 18 of 24 passes for 286 yards and five touchdowns, and earning a CFP national championship ring in the process.
On September 6, 2025, both brothers threw a touchdown pass in the same game against Kennesaw State, the first brother quarterback duo to do so at the college level in over a decade.
Together, the two also turned their mother’s illness into action. Fernando and Alberto created charity menu items, including the “Mendoza Bros. Burger” at BuffaLouie’s and the “Mendoza Bros. Cubano” at Gable’s Bagels in Bloomington, Indiana, with all proceeds going toward multiple sclerosis research.

Alberto and I play football not for ourselves, we have a lot of whys why we do it. One of the whys is our mom. Another why is our entire family. Our entire family comes from a Cuban background, and that’s something we always take deeply to heart.”

After Indiana’s title run, Alberto entered the transfer portal and on January 20, 2026, committed to Georgia Tech, where the 6-foot-2, 207-pound redshirt freshman is now ready to build his own legacy.
As for Max Mendoza, the youngest of the trio, he has kept a private profile away from the public spotlight.
